Electron: HID and USB permission checks can be attributed to the wrong origin

  • Disclosed: 21.10.2026
  • Updated: 21.10.2026 20:25

Impact

For hid and usb permission checks initiated from an iframe, session.setPermissionCheckHandler was provided with the top-level frame's origin and details rather than those of the requesting frame. Applications that grant these permissions based on origin may inadvertently allow an embedded frame access intended for the top-level page.

Applications are only affected if they use setPermissionCheckHandler with origin-based logic for hid or usb and embed cross-origin iframes with allow="hid" or allow="usb". Applications that do not delegate these features to untrusted iframes are not affected.

Workarounds

Do not add allow="hid" or allow="usb" to untrusted iframes, or implement your decision logic in the select-hid-device / select-usb-device handler using details.frame.

Fixed Versions

  • 45.0.0-alpha.5
  • 44.3.0
  • 43.7.0
  • 42.11.3

What to do

Upgrade to 45.0.0-alpha.5, 44.3.0, 43.7.0, 42.11.3, or later.

If upgrading is not immediately possible, apply the workarounds:

  • Do not add allow="hid" or allow="usb" to untrusted iframes.
  • Base permission decisions in your select-hid-device / select-usb-device handler on details.frame.
